WILPF invites you to the Eastern European Matinee

at november 23rd 2018 (Sun.) in the Hamburg women’s library Denkträume, Grindelallee 43 (Sauerberghof, house C, staircase C2) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Women, Democratization and the Role of the Media in Social Change Processes.

What does democracy mean today and what role do media play in democratization processes? How important is the influence of women?

Peace acivists Gulnara Shahinian from Armenia and Tolekan Ismailova from Kyrgyzstan discuss these questions with Heidi Meinzolt, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).Translation into English/German from Anna Osypova and Adilya Zaripova, Berlin.

The occasion for the event is the so-called „Velvet Revolution“ in Armenia, which occurred only a few weeks ago and led to the resignation of the president. This opened the way for democratic elections. An important contribution was made by Democracy Today, a non-governmental organization founded by Gulnara Shahinian. She and Tolekan Ismailowa are involved in a long-term cooperation with the International Women’s League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) who has promoted a vision of a non-violent world for more than 100 years.

Besides Gulnara Shahinian and Tolekan Ismailova there will also be present: Anna Ishkanian, Democracy Today, Olena Uvarova, Charkiv International Legal Forum and Marija Yasenovka, Civic Solidarity Platform (CSP). They are also available for a further exchange after the matinee.

(The WILPF Germany group awards the Anita Augspurg Prize ‘Rebellious women against war’ on 21 September 2018 in Verden to Gulnara Shahinian.)
